California Scooter Company (CSC) is announcing the forthcoming release of its first-ever trike kit. The company currently has a running prototype that’s in the process of being perfected, with a production release of the street-legal kit planned for spring 2012.

CSC plans to sell the trike unit as an accessory kit, meaning buyers will need to own a CSC motorcycle or another motorcycle upon which they can install it. The kit will be a bolt-on package with all necessary features for a fully street-legal vehicle. Installation will not require cutting, welding or painting.

The trike kit includes a rear brake and sprocket, and CSC’s engineers are working on refining the gear ratios. We’re told the 40T rear sprocket on the current prototype offers a very spirited and fast ride (CSC’s stock bikes user a 26T or 28T sprocket). Here are some other features you can expect to find on the completed kit:
  • Taillight, turn signals, mounting brackets, wiring and all necessary installation hardware.
  • Fully functional differential to account for different rear wheel speeds as the vehicle negotiates turns.
  • Fenders, fender mounting brackets and all required hardware. CSC plans to offer fenders with a style similar to those on its existing motorcycle models. In keeping with the company’s current design philosophy, fenders will be all steel, as will the rest of the trike kit, with the exception of the taillight lens and turn-signal lenses.
  • Compatibility with standard CSC motorcycle wheels, meaning the trike can use CSC’s stock steel wheels or its accessory chrome, billet and wire wheel.
  • A variety of rear section packages. Concepts include a Model T pickup bed style, a stake bed truck style, a rear seat style, and a cargo compartment style. And because CSC knows many of its customers will want to style their own packages, a bare-bones kit will also be available.

California Scooter Company is a California-based motorcycle manufacturer operating as a subsidiary of Pro-One Performance Manufacturing. CSC currently manufactures three motorcycle models—the California Classic, the Greaser and the Babydoll—that are inspired by the Mustang motorcycle built in Glendale, Calif., in the 1940s through the early 1960s. Each of the company’s motorcycles is built at its factory in La Verne, Calif., and is inspected by one of the company’s master builders before leaving the facility.
