Putting the FRANK & STEIN in Trikes

Two Friends, South Dakota and the Outlaw Trail

4/20/2012, by Garry Stuart
“I think I’ll take this along on the road trip,” said Frank, “It’s just that since I built this Trike I got fed up with everyone saying ‘okay, very nice, but you couldn’t ride it anywhere’.” I thought to myself that a two-thousand mile road trip, some of it on unpaved gravel roads, would be a good test of the build quality of any custom bike let alone an ultra-low hardtail trike.

Uncle Bill's Trike

Retro-Styling and Big Power, Australian Style

4/18/2012, Doc Robinson
So who is Uncle Bill anyway, and where did he spring from I hear you asking? Well, before I address those questions take a good gander at the Springer Trike gracing these pages. Does it look old school to you? It bloody well should, as Uncle Bill’s website loudly and proudly proclaims, he only builds old school bobbers, rigids, Softails and Trikes.

Dottie's Ride

92 and Livin' Large

4/12/2012, Molly “Triker Chick” Kight
Moilly "Triker Girl" Kight had the honor of chauffeuring 92 years young Dottie Slater on a sixty-mile Trike ride. It began from Dotties modest home in Grover Beach to the foggy coastal hamlet of San Simeon- made famous by its former resident William Randolph Hearst and his lavish castle.

Long Beach Grand Prix Goldwing Trike

Fast Agile and Beautiful

4/5/2012, Toph Bolivar
This morning while attending my Chilean Chihuahua Champions Challenge on the Concourse I caught a glimpse a passing white blur. This bolt of white lightning was on the Grand Prix of Long Beach racetrack dressed to kill on, get this, a white Goldwing Trike. Yep- all 1,800cc's of Six-cylinder Japanese technology mated to a Champion Trikes Independent Rear Suspension setup. I was lucky enough to snap a pic at the start/finish line for the race as the raven-haired woman of asian descent mocked me with her prowess and style.

Inside Your Trike: Electronic Engine Control and Throttle-by-Wire

Where are the Throttle Cables?

4/3/2012, Phil Buonpastore & Toph Bocchiaro
New BMW motorcycles have it, as do Harley-Davidson Touring bikes and modern Trikes, so do many models of cars and even jet aircraft. What is it? Throttle-, drive- or fly-by-wire—electronic throttle control (H-D’s official wording) and engine management systems, of course. To take on the entire concept of how throttle-by-wire (TBW; used here throughout for simplicity) is used in every type of transportation technology is to exceed the scope of what can be covered here, but there is much that can be discussed about the positives and negatives of using such a system in Trikes. Here, we’ll touch upon some reasons why using electronic throttle control systems in Trikes should be examined on its own merits as compared to its being used in almost any other mode of transportation.

BANDIT'S BEDROLL

This puppy was designed by Bandit 15 years ago, and it's still the best on the market. It's tough, and designed to carry tools, enough threads to last a long weekend, and incidentals. Plus it acts as a wind break. I've ridden to Sturgis and Milwaukee using only a Bandit's bedroll and a small tank bag.--Wrench

EASTER SUNDAY POST FOR APRIL 8, 2012
Where are the eggs? It's interesting living down at the harbor away from any residential shanergary. When a holiday arrives the only indication is the lack of traffic, trucks and folks. The place is vacant for a day. So no sign of Easter Eggs, or rabbits. Although, the dogs have been killing baby possums every night. I can't figure it out. Where do they come from, and why can't they escape? Let's hit the news. I need to finish up my son's seat pan and ship it back to Le Pera for classic upholstery. A gang of sparrows just flew into the shop. Are they looking for colored eggs?

Wet Sunday Post for March 25, 2012
This may just be the toughest year I've encountered since I left ER. We've taken on a bunch of additional projects and stepped seriously beyond our comfort zone. Once more, I'm going to attempt to be candid with only our Cantina members about my feelings, good and bad, as we face whatever we encounter this year. Our mantra is simple: We will do everything with honor, honesty, and never give up. In addition, while we grapple with projects, we will do all in our power to help others in the industry, from readers, to the rights community, to our Bikernet advertisers, and our Bonneville Sponsors.

Daytona Party Weekend Sunday Post, March 11, 2012
Yesterday was nuts. We scored a Leonardo da Vinci bicycle that was built after a supposed fake da Vinci sketch. Then we stopped at Pacific Coast Cycles in Long Beach and asked to borrow a set of 45 cases to help with the Bonne Belle mock-up. Mike, who is destined for open-heart surgery in a couple of days, just happened to have a complete motor on a stand. He offered it, and we loaded it into a milk crate and headed home. Never a dull moment. Let's hit the news. Jeremiah is headed in our direction to help with mounting Bare Knuckle, heavy-duty fenders on the Bonne Belle, this afternoon.
