PRODUCT REVIEW: Thumbnail Extensions for Small Hands

Why didn't we think of that?

This is one of those products where you say, "Why didn't I think of that?" TRC Products has solved a big problem for smaller riders with the creation of a product called Thumbnails. This simple yet useful invention makes it easy for small hands to reach the turn signals on Harley-Davidson motorcycles and trike conversions.

TRC Products developed Thumbnails after one of the company’s staffers, a woman rider, was having trouble reaching her motorcycle's turn signal buttons without moving her hand off the throttle or clutch—not a good thing to do while riding. So the Thumbnails were born.

Here you can see how a rider's thumb can easily reach the turn signal with the Thumbnails taped on.

Thumbnails are essentially little pieces of plastic with double-sided tape on the back. To attach one, the instructions say to first clean the surface of the turn signal button with alcohol (a packet of alcohol is included) so that it’s free of grease and dirt, allowing the tape to stick better.

After swabbing your turn signal button and letting it dry, you simply remove the film off the double-sided tape and press the extension onto your existing turn signal. The tape is fairly strong, and we never had problems with it coming off when we tested the product—just be sure not to apply more pressure than normal. And remember, it’s only tape, so if you want to remove it, you can.

In addition to Thumbnails, TRC Products also offers the Thumbnail Curve, an updated version of the original product. The Curve was developed based on feedback from some of the first users of Thumbnails, resulting in a more contoured and sleeker design. The Thumbnail Curve covers the stock button better so that the extension is right within reach when a rider reaches for the turn signal, making it even easier for those with shorter fingers to reach the turn signals.

The Thumbnail Curve is more contoured than the original thumbnail extension so thumbs can reach it better.

Thumbnails and the Thumbnail Curve come two to a package, one for each turn signal. They fit 1996 and newer Harley-Davidson models and retail for $10 or $15, depending on the model and color, plus shipping and handling. Both models are available in black and chrome, while the Thumbnail Curve is also available in a black pearl color.

Even if you’re a Harley-Davidson rider who has no trouble reaching your turn signals, check out this other cool product from TRC Products that adds a little bling to black Harley-Davidson fairings. "Cateyes" are a trim cover created for Harley-Davidson Batwing fairing accessory buttons. With a prism finish on a flat surface, Cateyes are designed to reduce glare.
